Anti-Bias Education

Anti-bias education is a study of equity & inequity and is founded in the belief that all people deserve
to develop to their fullest potential.

At NBCC this is accomplished by assuring that each child/family is culturally visible, treated with respect,
and recognized for their individuality & humanity. Our early childhood educators are dedicated to
all children's healthy development and well being and want children to feel powerful and competent.
Daily interactions and curriculum will reflect these anti-bias foundations.

There are four goals to an anti-bias classroom:

1. Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities.

2. Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences,
    and deep, caring human connections.

3. Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness, have language to describe unfairness, and understand
    that unfairness hurts.

4. Each child will demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others or alone, against prejedice
    and/or discriminatory actions.

Our staff has been trained and certificated by Cabrillo College's anti-bias program and have been fortunate

to study under our local anti-bias experts: Julie Olsen Edwards, Jean Gallagher-Heil, & Eric Hoffman.
